Achieve Success This New Year

Nobody has it all figure out because there’s no manual for life.
All of us as individuals eventually succeed after we try, fail, try again, fail better, etc.
We all are on a journey in life and your path is different and unique from everyone else.
You may have had a friend that went to college and became a successful doctor or one that didn’t go to school and is a landlord.
The fact is you have the job to figure out what makes you tick and what dreams do you want to pursue to make you successful in this new year.
The good news is every new year is a gift and you have the opportunity to reflect and learn.
Time for you to take inventory and identify the following:
- What made you happy and what didn’t
- What actions moved you forward and what self sabotaging behaviors kept hindered you
- What made you shout for joy and what had you weeping in pain
So let’s dig into the steps to take to set yourself up for success in this new year.
Step #1 - Reflection

One of the best teachers is the past. Look at the good, the bad, and the ugly is a good exercise and a great way to create a better future.
Your first step to being successful in this new year is to start by writing a list that consist of how and with whom you spent most of your time.
No doubt a year is a long time and many things happened in your life. You may have started a new job, took relaxing vacations, made new friends and let old ones go, and other memories that will last a lifetime.
Take your time and do a thorough job. This is where a journal comes in handy because you want to capture the small details because these are what matter the most sometimes.
Next, underline the events, people, and changes that had the biggest impact on you. Maybe you had a baby or went on golfing with your best friend every other weekend… both are different in nature, but they impacted your life.
Step #2 – Analyze The Data

Once you have your list you must separate the data from the noise.
In order to achieve success in this new year is you have to double down on what works and resonates with your dreams and passions.
Therefore your next step is to put the Pareto principle in action, which states that 80% of results come from 20% of your efforts.
You probably have tried lots of things… maybe you’ve had a ton of creative business ideas and met thousands of people over your lifetime. But only a few of them turned your life into what it is today.
The last step is to find the 20% that created most of your happiness – or unhappiness and make a list for each.
Don’t be surprised if you see a surprising pattern!
I have learned over the years that relationships with others have the greatest impact on my life. Also, quality time with friends and family brings me happiness and joy.
In my research I found out that Harvard University has confirmed this as well with an 80-year study… they concluded the biggest factor determining happiness are your relationships with others.
Now only you know who and what has the biggest impact on your life, so go ahead and get started now writing your lists.
Then just like in poker, double down on the good and avoid the bad.
Step #3 – Take Action

"Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, and others make it happen."
Michael Jordan Tweet
Change can only come through action… and this action is what will help you achieve success in this new year.
With this new knowledge you now know what you should take action on and shouldn’t take action on.
However, if you don’t work at it to make it happen, you’ll get stuck and not move forward. Ultimately this means the last digit of the year will change, but your life won’t.
Other Helpful Tips For New Year Success
It is safe to say that we all of created grandiose plans that never materialize… instead use these little helpful tips to make success inevitable.
Remind yourself of what matters
I put my top and bottom 20% on a piece of paper and glued it next to my desk. Every day, it reminds me what I want to do more of – and what I need to let go.
Organize your calendar in advance
Don’t leave things to chance… rather make time for them on your calendar. This includes vacations, date nights, self-development, time with family and long weekends with your best buddy. Basically, whatever is the top of my list and is important to me, I make time for it over the next 12 months.
Reward yourself
There are things that require hard in the short run, but pay off over time, like hitting the gym or meeting a business goal. I like to treat myself or put $5 in a jar every time I achieve something.
Find an accountability partner
Whether you plan to have a date night, keep a daily journal, or work out regularly – get an accountability partner to hold you accountable. It’s way to easy to get off track. Ask your partner or a good friend to check in with you on a regular basis.
Make happen what needs to happen by putting first things first to achieve success in 2023.
